When Wet Air Quietly Becomes a Production Problem
A three-degree rise in pressure dew point is enough to turn a clear coat cloudy, create paint fisheyes, clog powder-coat nozzles, or leave moisture marks on sealed packaging. When product quality drops, most teams check the compressor first. The more reliable move is to test air dryer performance before the symptom spreads across the line.
The check does not require a laboratory. A calibrated dew point meter, two pressure gauges, and a stopwatch will separate a healthy dryer from a unit that is merely running.
Test Dew Point, Not Just Dryer Outlet Temperature
Measure the pressure dew point at the dryer outlet under normal load, not ambient humidity at the room. A refrigerated dryer in a stable Panrui installation typically operates in the 2–10°C pressure dew point 范围. If the reading drifts above 10°C while the compressor runs at full flow, the dryer is no longer removing enough moisture for the process.
Record the reading for at least 30 minutes during peak production. A one-time sample taken during a lunch break will miss the load-related failure that appears only when the air demand is highest.
Check Whether Condensate Is Actually Leaving the System
In one Panrui site assessment, several refrigerated dryers were leaking internally, yet the room still looked busy. The key finding: the dryers had stopped producing useful condensate and had no remaining water-removal effect, even though the compressor package was still supplying air. Product-quality problems continued until the drying stage was corrected.
Watch the auto-drain. If the drain is stuck open, the dryer loses compressed air. If it is stuck closed, water accumulates inside the separator and is carried downstream. Either failure can pass a visual inspection while ruining the dew point.
Measure Inlet Temperature and Differential Pressure
Dryer capacity is rated at specific inlet conditions. When the compressor room runs hot, the dryer must reject more heat. Panrui packages the complete screw compressor system for 52°C extreme ambient operation, far above the 40°C industry design norm, so the surrounding heat load is part of the dryer test—not a separate maintenance item.
Install a gauge before and after the dryer. A rising differential pressure signals a saturated filter element, a restricted separator, or ice forming in the evaporator. More than a small increase means the dryer is fighting the airflow and the process is receiving less clean, dry air.
Run a 30-Minute Performance Test
- Record compressor load, dryer inlet temperature, and pressure dew point every 5 分钟.
- Compare the pressure dew point against the 2–10°C refrigerated-dryer reference under peak flow.
- Collect condensate at the auto-drain and check for steady discharge without continuous air loss.
- Measure pressure drop across the dryer and filter package while the compressor is at full output.
- Verify that the dew point returns to the target within 10 minutes after the load spike ends.
This sequence separates normal wear from a failing dryer. If the dew point stays high, drains do not discharge, or pressure drop keeps climbing, treat the dryer as the cause until proven otherwise.
Repair, Upgrade, or Right-Size the Dryer
A leak that can be sealed and recharged may be worth repairing. A dryer that cannot hold a stable dew point, or one undersized for the compressor, should be replaced with a correctly matched unit integrated into the system. For fluctuating production, pairing the dryer with a 变速螺杆空气压缩机 helps keep inlet flow and temperature inside the range where the dryer is rated to perform.
The dryer should always be evaluated as part of the full compressed-air chain. Start from the 螺杆空气压缩机, then check filtration, 烘干机, storage, and the point of use. If ultra-dry air is required, consider a desiccant stage downstream instead of pushing a refrigerated dryer beyond its limits.
异议: “The Dryer Is Running, So the Air Must Be Dry”
Running is not performance. A compressor can hold pressure while the dryer silently loses its ability to remove water, especially when drains clog or refrigerant leaks. The only way to verify air dryer performance is to measure pressure dew point and confirm that water is leaving the system. If you cannot see the measurement, you are guessing about the root cause.
结论
When quality drops, do not wait for a scrap event to confirm the diagnosis. Test air dryer performance with dew point, condensate discharge, and pressure-drop checks under real load. Use the 2–10°C pressure dew point range as the baseline, correct the drains and filters, and replace the dryer if it cannot return to spec.
